US Tax Deadlines for Expats in 2025

US tax deadlines for Americans living abroad are more complex than for domestic filers, there are multiple extension layers, separate FBAR deadlines, and country-specific considerations. Understanding exactly when each deadline falls, and what to do if you miss one, is essential for avoiding penalties.

April 15, 2025, the standard deadline

April 15 is the standard US tax return deadline for most Americans. Even if you're living abroad and qualify for extensions, any tax owed is due by April 15 to avoid interest charges. You may not owe any penalties (thanks to extensions), but interest accrues on unpaid tax from April 15 onward, regardless of extensions granted. If you expect to owe, make an estimated payment by April 15.

June 15, 2025, automatic extension for US persons abroad

Americans living and working outside the US receive an automatic 2-month extension of time to file (but not to pay), no form required. To claim this extension, you must attach a statement to your return explaining that you qualify (you live abroad and your main place of business or post of duty is outside the US). The June 15 deadline applies to both the return filing and FBAR filing (FinCEN 114). Note: if June 15 falls on a weekend, the deadline shifts to the next business day.

October 15, 2025, final extension deadline

You can request a further extension to October 15 by filing Form 4868 by April 15 (or June 15 if you're abroad). This extends the filing deadline only, tax owed remains due by the earlier deadlines. October 15 is the absolute last date to file without penalties. FBAR has an automatic extension to October 15 (same as the return), no form needed.

FBAR-specific deadlines

FBAR (FinCEN 114) has its own deadline structure: April 15, 2025 initially; automatic extension to October 15, 2025 for all filers (no form required, no distinction between domestic and foreign residents). FBAR is filed separately through FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System, not with the IRS. There is no further extension beyond October 15 for FBAR.

Quarterly estimated tax due dates

If you're self-employed or have income not subject to withholding, you typically owe estimated taxes quarterly: April 15, June 15, September 15 (2025), and January 15, 2026. Expats living abroad still owe quarterly estimated payments on the same schedule. Underpayment penalties apply if you don't pay at least 90% of the current year's tax (or 100% of last year's). FEIE and FTC can significantly reduce the required quarterly payments.

Frequently asked questions about US Tax Deadlines for Expats in 2025

What if I miss the June 15 deadline?

If you miss June 15 without having filed Form 4868 for the October extension, late-filing penalties begin accruing. File as soon as possible, the penalty is 5% of unpaid tax per month, up to 25%. If you don't owe any tax, there's no failure-to-file penalty (though interest may apply if tax is eventually assessed).

Can I file an extension just to buy more time?

Yes. Filing Form 4868 by April 15 extends your filing deadline to October 15. You don't need a reason. The extension applies automatically to the return; for FBAR, the extension to October 15 is automatic without any form.

Do I need to pay estimated taxes quarterly if FEIE eliminates my liability?

If FEIE (or FTC) reduces your US tax liability to zero, you have no estimated tax obligation. However, if your income or exclusion changes mid-year, you could end up owing something. Once you know your approximate liability for the year, quarterly payments ensure you don't owe a penalty.

What is the FBAR deadline for 2025?

FBAR for the 2024 tax year is due April 15, 2025, with an automatic extension to October 15, 2025. No form is needed for the FBAR extension, it's granted automatically to all US persons.
