UK Late Filers

Catch Up on Overdue UK Self Assessment Returns

Missing a UK Self Assessment filing deadline immediately triggers a £100 late-filing penalty from HMRC, and further daily and monthly charges accumulate quickly. Whether you missed last year's return or have several years of overdue filings, catching up promptly is the most effective way to stop the penalties growing. Our UK late-filing packages cover everything from preparing your overdue returns to reviewing and challenging penalties with HMRC.

Is this for me?

  • Missed the 31 January Self Assessment deadline for one or more tax years
  • Received a penalty notice from HMRC for late filing or non-filing
  • Self-employed, a company director, or earning income outside PAYE
  • Living abroad with UK rental, employment, or investment income not yet declared
  • Wanting to reduce or appeal HMRC late-filing and interest charges

Why this is complex

  • HMRC late-filing penalties compound quickly, £100 on day one, then daily charges after 3 months
  • Voluntary disclosure before HMRC contact typically results in lower penalties
  • Interest accrues daily on unpaid tax from the original deadline
  • A reasonable excuse appeal can cancel automatic penalties if accepted by HMRC
  • Overdue returns block HMRC from issuing tax credits, refunds, and mortgage references

Frequently asked questions about Catch Up on Overdue UK Self Assessment Returns

What penalties does HMRC charge for a late Self Assessment return?

HMRC's automatic penalty structure starts at £100 on the day after the deadline (31 January). After 3 months, daily £10 penalties apply for up to 90 days (up to £900). After 6 months, a further 5% of the tax due (minimum £300) is charged. After 12 months, another 5% (minimum £300). Acting quickly after a missed deadline is the most effective way to limit the total penalty.

Can HMRC penalties be reduced or cancelled?

Yes, HMRC may accept a 'reasonable excuse' appeal if you had a genuine reason for missing the deadline (serious illness, bereavement, or technical failure on HMRC's own systems). We review your circumstances and handle the appeal on your behalf as part of the Multi-Year package.

How far back can HMRC go for unfiled returns?

HMRC can generally open an enquiry up to 4 years after the end of the tax year for innocent errors, 6 years for careless errors, and 20 years for deliberate non-filing. Most genuine late filers fall into the 4–6 year window. Coming forward voluntarily before HMRC contacts you typically results in a better outcome.

I have multiple overdue years, where do I start?

Start with the most recent overdue year to stop new penalties accruing, then work backwards. Our Multi-Year package covers up to 3 overdue years in one engagement and includes a penalty and interest review with HMRC across all the years caught up.
